Job Summary: The Finance Officer serves as the backbone of our financial operations. As a junior accounting professional, you will be responsible for maintaining meticulous financial records, ensuring the accuracy of our daily bookkeeping, and generating the diverse reports required to guide our strategic decisions. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented individual who understands that in a microfinance environment, every shilling counts toward supporting our clients’ growth.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Bookkeeping & Ledger Management
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all financial transactions, including loan disbursements, repayments, and operating expenses.
- Perform daily bank and cash reconciliations to ensure all internal records match bank statements and mobile money wallets.
- Manage accounts payable and receivable, ensuring all vendor payments and staff reimbursements are processed on time and correctly coded.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss, Cash Flow).
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and perform monthly variance analysis (Actual vs. Budget).
- Support the external audit process by providing necessary documentation and schedules.
Non-Financial & Operational Reporting
- Generate weekly portfolio reports, including Portfolio at Risk (PAR) and repayment rate metrics.
- Compile social impact and operational reports for management, tracking the number of businesses supported and regional outreach.
- Maintain an organized digital and physical filing system for all financial and legal documents.
Compliance & Tax
- Ensure the business remains compliant with Ugandan tax laws (VAT, PAYE, WHT, LST) and timely filing with the URA.
- Monitor adherence to internal financial controls and procurement policies.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Professional Progress: Level 1 or 2 of CPA (U) or ACCA is highly desirable.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Tally, or specialized Microfinance Banking Systems).
- Advanced Excel skills (ability to use VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, and build automated reporting templates).
- Experience: 1–2 years of experience in an accounting or finance role, preferably within a financial institution or a high-volume retail business.
